Paris-Malaquais School of Architecture is an important architecture research centre recognized at national level and internationally. The school has three research units whose work enriches the education provided by the school :
→ the ACS laboratory (19th and 20th century Architecture, Culture and Society) (UMR CNRS AUSSER no. 3329), whose main areas of research are the architecture of today’s dwellings and lifestyles ; the history of 20th century architecture ; urban forms and architectural design ; architecture, culture and intellectual production ;
→ the GSA laboratory (Geometry, Structure, Architecture), whose main areas of research are structural morphology and constructional culture ;
→ the LIAT laboratory (Infrastructure, Architecture, Territory), whose main areas of research are the analysis of contexts (towns and cities, territories, landscapes) marked by infrastructure and major facility developments.
The school’s teachers are predominantly involved in research activities. 65% are members of a research team, 43% of whom in one of the school’s three laboratories. The school’s research lecturers accredited to lead research work (HDR) supervise an average of thirty PhD students preparing for an architecture PhD.
The place of research in the school’s range of courses
Introduction to research starts in the 1st cycle, in the 3rd year (bachelor’s degree). The “research pathway” then offered to master’s students is designed as a specialization of the training provided within the framework of the dissertation and a more in-depth introduction to research methods. It constitutes a form of groundwork for the PhD for students who so wish.
Any students who have a state-recognized qualification in architecture (post-graduate master’s degree) can start a doctoral thesis in architecture in any university of their choosing.
At Paris-Malaquais School of Architecture, the doctoral course is organized in partnership with PSL University, at Ecole normale supérieure et de Mines Paris.
