La transition écologique demande à modifier la perception du monde pour construire un imaginaire commun durable. Une transition culturelle l’accompagne donc et précède toute action écologique. Les carrières de Saint-Vaast-lès-Mello, exploitées pour leur calcaire, sont un paysage anthropique défini par l’extraction de sa propre substance ; la construction par la machine d’un vide local au profit du paysage régional. Calcarea propose d’exploiter son potentiel architectural latent à travers une réhabilitation en un parc à thèmes. Alors que l’avenir de cette architecture touristique de masse est interrogé, sa valeur immersive sert à des fins d’apprentissage. La carrière, au fil de son exploitation, révèle trois strates : la biodiversité, l’humain et le géologique. Ces trois temporalités, inscrites dans la substance du site, constituent la thématisation du parc.
Tout en s’inscrivant comme un manifeste pour la revalorisation raisonnée de la pierre et de ses déchets, Calcarea propose une stratégie d’implantation où le paysage, ses ressources et sa mémoire viennent dicter l’intervention humaine.
To achieve a green society, our perception of the world needs to change and a sustainable common imaginary needs to be established.
Saint-Vaast-lès-Mello’s limestone quarry is an anthropic landscape defined by the extraction of its own matter. Heavy machineries dig a local void while building the regional landscapes through limestone architecture.
Our project aims to claim the architectural potential that exists within the constructed void of the quarries, in order to imagine a new type of theme park. Calcarea takes advantage of the immersive value within theme parks in order to become a learning tool.
Indeed, the quarries reveal three layers: geology, biology and human action. The combination of these three layers, from which originates the remarkable landscapes of the site, becomes the thematization of our park. Consequently, the visitors are forced to observe them and to get a better understanding of the Earth.
Calcarea is a manifesto for the rational reuse of stone and its waste products, and suggests a strategy where the landscape, its resources and its memory dictate human intervention.
