Partant du constat d’une bifurcation ancrée dans la pensée architecturale, ce projet analyse la distinction qui a été faite entre une architecture de la « totalité » : finie, définie, concevable, fondée sur un monde objectif et mesurable, et une archi-tecture de l’« infini » : ouverte, mouvante, irréductible, issue d’un monde subjectif et vécu.
Cette rupture a nourri une tradition centrée sur la « totalité », où l’architecture est traduite en formes rigides, closes, pensées comme autonomes et détachées du réel. Or, en plus d’empêcher les architectes de manipuler ce qui dépasse cette « totalité », cette tradition produit trop souvent des bâtiments figés, inadaptables, incapables d’évoluer avec le temps ou les usages.
Aujourd’hui, cette fixité contribue à l’obsolescence rapide des édifices, souvent promis à la démolition, générant déchets et gaspillage d’énergie grise. Ce projet cherche à dépasser cette tradition en explorant les possibilités d’une architecture qui échappe au paradigme de la « totalité » : qui s’autorise de fait, à être infinie, indéfinie, inconcevable.
Starting from the observation of a bifurcation rooted in architectural thought, this project analyzes the distinction that has been drawn between an architecture of “totality”—finite, defined, conceivable, grounded in an objective and measurable world—and an architecture of the “infinite”—open, shifting, irreducible, stemming from a subjective and lived world.
This rupture has nourished a tradition centered on “totality,” where architecture is translated into rigid, closed forms, conceived as autonomous and detached from reality. Yet, beyond preventing architects from engaging with what lies beyond this “totality,” such a tradition too often produces static buildings—unable to adapt or evolve with time or with use.
Today, this fixity contributes to the rapid obsolescence of buildings, often destined for demolition, generating waste and the squandering of embodied energy. This project seeks to move beyond that tradition by exploring the possibilities of an architecture that escapes the paradigm of “totality”: one that allows itself, in fact, to be infinite, undefined, inconceivable.
