In 1853, the Hospital’s Lighthouse of Honfleur in Normandy was raised, not to signal the entrance to the port, but so that ships entering the bay of the Seine could avoid the reef of the Ratier bank. Generations of lighthouse keepers followed one another and recorded meteorological observations in their logbooks. Observing, watching, caring; between the meticulous polishing of the lens and the constant lookout over shifting horizons, the lighthouse keeper embodied a patience devoted to preserving traces. In 1908, due to the evolution of the coastline, the lighthouse was extinguished and its lantern removed. Today, it seems to be stranded in the city, a vestige of an ancient sea that has retreated.

In the wake of the book Vers l’écriture, Récit de transmission de Jeanne Benameur, I try to establish a process of architectural writing, in order to awaken the memory and inscribe the building again in the life of the Honfleurais. And if the extinguished lighthouses were inhabited again, what stories could be told?

The heart inked at the edge of the world, trying to find the light again.
