Cette présentation propose une lecture de certaines pratiques esthétiques liées à la justice climatique – en particulier l’analyse des propagandes climatiques par Jonas Staal, les enquêtes médico-légales (forensic) sur la justice raciale d’Imani Jacqueline Brown et Forensic Architecture, et le futurisme indigène de TJ Cuthand. Les principaux points de la conférence sont les suivants : 1) la justice climatique définit un cadre nécessairement global et intersectionnel, reliant la pensée environnementale aux préoccupations sociopolitiques ; 2) la justice climatique accuse le capitalisme d’être le système dominant de l’histoire mondiale, responsable de la transformation catastrophique de l’environnement ainsi que de la violence sociale ; 3) les solutions de justice climatique impliquent de penser au-delà du capitalisme racial et colonial ; 4) certains exemples d’art écocritique s’allient à la décolonisation indigène et aux politiques d’abolition, élargissant ainsi nos horizons de justice climatique et de futurité émancipatrice.
Emergency of Emergencies: The Aesthetics and Politics of Climate Justice
This presentation offers a reading of select aesthetic practices that connect with climate justice—specifically the analysis of climate propagandas by Jonas Staal; the forensic racial justice investigations of Imani Jacqueline Brown and Forensic Architecture; and the Indigenous futurism of TJ Cuthand. Key takeaways from the lecture include: 1) climate justice defines a framework that is necessarily comprehensive and intersectionalist, linking environmental thinking to socio-political concerns; 2) climate justice indicts capitalism as the dominant world-historical system that is responsible for catastrophic environmental transformation as well as social violence; 3) climate justice solutions entail thinking beyond racial and colonial capitalism; 4) select ecocritical examples of art join in alliance to Indigenous decolonization and abolition politics, expanding our horizons of climate justice and emancipatory futurity.
T.J. Demos écrit sur l’art contemporain et la politique mondiale. Il est professeur au département d’histoire de l’art et de la culture visuelle de l’université de Californie, à Santa Cruz, et directeur fondateur du Center for Creative Ecologies. Il étudie l’intersection de la culture visuelle, de la politique radicale et de l’écologie politique, et est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages, dont Beyond the World’s End : Arts of Living at the Crossing (Duke, 2020) ; Decolonizing Nature : Contemporary Art and Political Ecology (Sternberg, 2016) ; et Against the Anthropocene : Visual Culture and Environment Today (Sternberg, 2017). Il a récemment coédité The Routledge Companion on Contemporary Art, Visual Culture, and Climate Change (2021), il a été boursier du Getty Research Institute (printemps 2020) et a dirigé le projet de recherche Beyond the End of the World du Sawyer Seminar financé par Mellon (2019-21). Demos est également chaire et conservateur en chef du Climate Collective, offrant une programmation publique liée au programme Climate Emergency > Emergence de 2021 au Musée d’art, d’architecture et de technologie (Maat) de Lisbonne. T.J. Demos writes about contemporary art and global politics. He is Professor in the Department of the History of Art and Visual Culture, at University of California, Santa Cruz, and founding Director of its Center for Creative Ecologies. He researches the intersection of visual culture, radical politics, and political ecology, and is the author of numerous books, including Beyond the World’s End: Arts of Living at the Crossing (Duke, 2020); Decolonizing Nature: Contemporary Art and Political Ecology (Sternberg, 2016); and Against the Anthropocene: Visual Culture and Environment Today, (Sternberg, 2017). He recently co-edited The Routledge Companion on Contemporary Art, Visual Culture, and Climate Change (2021), was a Getty Research Institute Fellow (Spring 2020), and directed the Mellon-funded Sawyer Seminar research project Beyond the End of the World (2019-21). Demos is also Chair and Chief Curator of the Climate Collective, providing public programming related to the 2021 Climate Emergency > Emergence program at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (Maat) in Lisbon. His new book, Radical Futurisms: Ecologies of Collapse, Chronopolitics, and Justice-to-Come, is now out from Sternberg in Spring 2023.
